Lunigiana is literally translated as the region of the Moon probably a reference to an ancient tribe of Moon worshipers whose strange statues have become a symbol of this historically important region.
The history of the region is not however confined to ancient tribes, pilgrims to Rome travelled Lunigiana’s well worn paths and records show that The Archbishop of Canterbury passed through Lunigiana on his way to Rome in AD 994. The region also has important links with the famous, once rulers of Tuscany, the Medici family, in fact the house next door to Casa Celestina dates back to the sixteenth century and was owned by the family and used by the Magistrate. More recently the area was well known as a refuge for escaped prisoners of war with the many commemorative plaques testament to the heavy price that the brave locals paid for shielding allied servicemen.
It is a mountainous region dominated by the Appenine and the Apuan mountains, this serves to provide most of our properties with stunning views and a tranquillity that is very difficult to find elsewhere. But do not get the impression that this area is only for dreamers, gourmands, and lovers of the outdoors; one is only one hour away from some of the most glamorous coastal resorts in the Mediterranean. Fabulous resorts such as Portovenere, Portofino, Lerici and Viareggio are all within easy travelling distance.
